It was with zest and sheer determination that the floorball team, Labour Movement Floorball Club (LMFC) 2011 comprising of 10 NTUC members and 8 nEbO members, prepared for their journey to Melbourne to defend the title of the Australian Floorball Open 2008 (AFO 2008).
Team LMFC 2011 made their debut last year in Perth where they beat team Dingoes in the finals to be crowned the champions for Australia. It was a triumphant win, especially when they lost twice to Dingoes in the qualifying group stages. LMFC 2011 has also defended the Singapore Floorball League title for 10 consecutive years.
This year, the team was faced with the pressures of defending the title, along with the challenges of meeting opponents twice their size and the coldest winter in Melbourne in decades. LMFC 2011 star Jill Quek who was named Most Valuable Player last year was also missing in action. Led by their new coach, Dennis Lim, the team underwent vigorous court, physical and simulation trainings before embarking on this competition.
In the group stage, LMFC 2011 drew Emus WA (aka Dingoes) and then lost to them on the second match. During the semi-finals, LMFC 2011 again lost to Emus WA but nudged their way to the finals after beating Vikings. They were to meet Emus WA a fourth time.
Undaunted, the team prepared themselves mentally and physically for the final battle against their rival team.
It was nail-biting till the final whistle as Emus WA managed to net a goal first from a penalty. LMFC 2011 followed with an equaliser from a wrap-around goal by Stella Chia and the final winning goal by Jasmine Giam. Even during the last few seconds, both teams fought for the ball causing tense moments for the goal keepers on both sides. The score speaks for itself. At 3-2 for LMFC 2011, history has repeated itself!
LMFC 2011 coach Dennis Lim’s words ring true. “All those qualifying matches don’t count,” he says. “It’s this final battle that counts and we will hit them where it hurts the most!”
Indeed, as with last year where most did not give LMFC 2011 a chance in the finals, the team proved that their appetites to winning are huge.
The team finished as the champions of AFO 2008 with an All-Star-Team Goalkeeper Carmen Teo, All-Star-Team Defender Jaime Cheong and All-Star-Team Center Martha Quek.
