nEbO brings Lunar New Year celebrations to senior citizens

nEbO brings Lunar New Year celebrations to senior citizens through free makeover and health check-ups

More than 90 nEbO members from ITE College East use the skills and knowledge they learnt to give 40 NTUC Eldercare seniors a beautiful start to the Lunar New Year

1          Singapore, 19 February 2010- nEbO, the youth community under the Labour Movement and driven by NTUC Club, organised a Lunar New Year pampering session for a group of senior citizens aged 60 to 80 years old. Named ‘Health & Beauty Wellness for our Seniors’, this event is more meaningful and memorable because the elderly received a basic health check-up in addition to the usual facial care and hairdressing session. Conducted at ITE College East on 19th February 2010, Friday, this is a signature nEbO event to encourage youths to make use of their skills to benefit our elderly. Mr Matthias Yao, Mayor of South East District was the Guest-of-Honour and joined the participants in a special Lunar New Year lunch.

2          ‘Health & Beauty Wellness for our Seniors’ is an event initiated by nEbO to provide a platform where youths can practise the skills and knowledge they learnt during their course of studies to benefit others. Supported by ITE College East and NTUC Eldercare, youth volunteers from the School of Business & Services (Nitec in Beauty Therapy and Nitec in Hair Fashion & Design) provided complimentary facials as well as hair washing and styling sessions for 40 NTUC Eldercare seniors from the Jurong Central and Marsiling centres. The additional highlight for this year was the basic health check-ups provided by the youth volunteers from the School of Applied and Health Sciences (Nitec in Nursing). Surely, looking good and feeling good should go hand in hand, and this initiative was a great way for these seniors to start off the Lunar New Year.

3          Ms. Koh Jia Wen, nEbO member and youth volunteer (student studying Nitec in Beauty Therapy), said: “I was a little worried at first, as the elderly might feel that we are just students and may not do a good job. However, through our interaction with them and from the smiles on their faces, I am so glad that they had so much trust in us and appreciated our efforts.”

4          As part of the Lunar New Year celebrations, the youth volunteers from the Lion-Dance Troop welcomed our 40 seniors with a lion-dance performance to bring luck and fortune to the guests. After the one and a half hour pampering session, the participants then proceeded to enjoy an 8-course Lunar New Year lunch with the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Matthias Yao, Mayor of the South East District. During lunch, the Guest-of-Honour also presented mandarin oranges and an Ang Bao to each of the 40 senior citizens as a small gift for the new year.

About nEbO

nEbO, NTUC’s youth community, is a Labour Movement initiative driven by NTUC Club. nEbO was set up on 07.07.07 to provide a platform for youth engagement to develop and realise their potential through interest communities that include Music & Events, Sports, Care, Gaming, Lifestyle and Entrepreneurship.  Through nEbO, it is hoped that an emotional connection with youths can be nurtured and sustained, leading to a naturalised relationship with NTUC when the youths enter the workforce.

As a vibrant community of youths, powered by youths, for the youths, nEbO believes in learning by aspiration and leading by inspiration. With more than 30,000 youths joining the nEbO family, nEbO is on its way to be the largest local youth community and in a strong position to contribute to youth development in Singapore.
