Walk for Wellness 2019 at Downtown East!

New “technology edition” of 5km fun walk takes seniors, their families and friends through the revamped Downtown East and surrounding Pasir Ris Park

Singapore, 17 July 2019 – Organised by NTUC’s U Live community, Walk for Wellness is back for its sixth year to enrich the lives of active-agers. Come 27 July 2019, Downtown East will be transformed into a Wellness Village, with healthy cooking demonstrations, nutritional food sampling, health check-ups, and fitness booths.

Walk for Wellness is one of U Live’s anchor events to educate and encourage seniors in Singapore to take the first step in living an active and healthy lifestyle. More than 800 active-agers will be participating in this year’s edition with their family and friends.

Unique to this year’s event is the augmented reality (AR) technologies that will be incorporated into the 5km fun walk. As participants walk past certain “checkpoints” within Downtown East or along Pasir Ris Park, they can use their smartphones to receive health tips, and even promotions and rewards!

Other key highlights of the event include guest appearances by popular Mediacorp actor Zheng Ge Ping and Team Strong Silvers. These active agers are exemplar models to keeping healthy and staying fit.

“It is fun to exercise and keep fit with a community of friends, so I feel great to lead the walk with my teammates and Ge Ping today. I think staying active is very important, especially as we get older. My priority is to exercise and to keep fit and healthy for my family, because ‘Health is wealth’,” said Mr Ng Bee Kia, 74 years old, who is also a
U Live member.

Prior to the actual event day, U Live has partnered with various partners such as the Health Promotion Board (HPB) to conduct various health workshops and events for seniors and their families.

In support of healthy living and active ageing, Mr Desmond Choo, Mayor of North East CDC is also a Guest-of-Honour at today’s event.

“It’s inspiring to see so many seniors here today with family and friends. In addition to keeping fit, the walk incorporates AR technology for added engagement so that participants can get health tips via their smartphones. By making technology fun, seniors can keep up with times and continue to live healthy and purposeful lives,” said Mr Desmond Choo.

Other event activities today include a mass Zumba workout, free health check-ups, as well as cooking demonstrations on healthy eating.
